What is ClaimReview?
A tagging system for fact-checks
ClaimReview is a tagging system that publishers use to flag fact-check articles for search engines, apps and social media platforms. It identifies key elements of fact-checks for platforms such as Google, Bing, and Facebook. ClaimReview also can be used in new fact-checking apps such as those the Duke Reporters’ Lab is developing.
ClaimReview also summarizes a fact-check, noting the person and claim being checked and a conclusion about its accuracy.
Who created ClaimReview?
It grew from a suggestion from Washington Post Fact Checker Glenn Kessler and was developed through an open process involving the Duke Reporters’ Lab, the global fact-checking community, Google, Bing, and Jigsaw. Dozens of fact-checkers around the world already use it, including many signatories to the International Fact-Checking Network Code of Principles.
How do you make ClaimReview?
Any publisher can make ClaimReview for fact-check articles that both review a statement and assess its accuracy. The easiest way to make ClaimReview is to use the Fact Check Markup Tool, a form that instantly alerts search engines and other platforms to new fact-checks by submitting the data to DataCommons.org, making them available to all. To start using the tool, publishers must first get authorization through Google Search Console. Instructions on that can be found here.

It can be made through tools provided by the Reporters’ Lab for its FactStream partners (contact Erica Ryan for more information).
For WordPress users: Full Fact has developed an open-source ClaimReview plugin that adds a ClaimReview form into WordPress for you. As you write your article, you can also fill in the form, so that when you press publish, ClaimReview schema is automatically published alongside your fact-check.
To implement this plugin, refer your website administrator or developer to the WordPress plugin page. If your organization has additional needs, Google has also made available the Fact Check Tools API.
No matter how ClaimReview is made, publishers can use the Fact Check Markup Tool to view and modify all of their ClaimReview entries, including those created via CMS or FactStream.
